Frequently Asked Questions About Sublimation Printing

In this article, we will address some of the most frequently asked questions about sublimation printing and pressing using all the equipment from AM.CO.ZA.

Why Do We Need Protection SL Brown Tissue Paper While Heat Pressing?

When heat pressing from edge to edge or working with fabrics that have holes, such as mesh, protection paper, tissue paper, or liner paper is necessary. This paper prevents ink from seeping past the material's edges or through the holes, which could permanently stain the blanket and render it unusable.

Why Can You Not Press onto Cotton or Natural Fibres?

Sublimation works best on synthetic polyester rather than natural fibres like cotton. To demonstrate, compare two shirts: one with 60% polyester and 40% cotton, and another with 60% cotton and 40% polyester. The difference is clear in terms of vibrancy and ink absorption. Cotton does not bond well with sublimation ink, causing designs to fade after washing. For long-lasting prints, always opt for synthetic polyester fabrics.

Why Does the Sublimation Blanket SL Heat Mat Take So Long to Settle?

When first using a heat press, the mat must be properly settled. The easiest way to do this is to bring the mat forward until it is just tight enough, without over-tightening. Then, run the machine for at least 60 hours, preferably over a few days, to ensure the mat levels out. This prevents streaks and inconsistencies during pressing. A properly settled mat ensures even pressure distribution, avoiding wavy lines in prints.

Why Can You Not Print Directly onto Material and Then Heat Press?

Printing directly onto material before heat pressing is ineffective due to ink absorption variations. Paper maintains a consistent absorption rate, whereas fabric causes ink to spread unpredictably. Printing on paper ensures better detail and controlled absorption. Additionally, printing directly onto fabric can result in excessive gas dispersion during heat pressing, which is not only inefficient but also potentially toxic.

How Long Does Sublimation Ink Last Once Pressed onto Material?

Sublimation prints generally last longer than other signage applications because the ink bonds into the fibres at temperatures exceeding 200°C. Unlike ecosolvent or UV printing, which sits on top of materials, sublimation ink becomes part of the fabric. While longevity depends on exposure conditions, sublimation prints often outlast the material itself. For example, UV-coated materials can maintain prints for up to 15 years.

Can You Accidentally Iron Sublimation Ink Out of Fabric?

No, sublimation ink cannot be removed with a household iron. Most irons heat up to 150-180°C, whereas sublimation printing occurs at 195-240°C. Since the iron does not reach the necessary sublimation temperature, the ink remains embedded in the material.

Does Having Two Print Heads Improve Quality or Just Speed Up Printing?

Having two print heads does not necessarily improve quality, but it enhances functionality, particularly for spot colour matching. More print heads allow for better accuracy in reproducing specific colours like reds or blues, making it easier to match customer expectations. However, for first-time users, a single print head is easier to manage, requiring less calibration for consistent prints.

What is the Best Printing Pass for High-Quality Sublimation Prints?

For sublimation printing, an eight-pass setting provides the best balance of quality and efficiency. Since sublimation ink does not dry instantly, using an eight-pass ensures vibrant and detailed prints. For other ink types, such as DTF printing, a 12-pass may be necessary due to drying requirements.

What Besides Clothing Can You Make with Sublimation?

Sublimation extends beyond clothing to various items like mugs, plates, and keyrings. These blank products can be customised with sublimation prints, offering a wider market reach beyond apparel.

What Causes Ink to Transfer from Paper to Material?

Sublimation transfers ink through a process called burst sublimation. When exposed to heat and pressure, the ink transforms from a solid to a gas, embedding itself into synthetic fibres. This chemical bonding ensures durability, preventing the ink from washing out or fading easily.

Conclusion

These are some of the most common questions about sublimation printing. If you have any further queries, feel free to leave a comment, and we will be happy to address them. Don’t forget to subscribe and click the bell icon to stay updated with our latest videos.

Tote bags are a popular canvas for customization, but traditional methods often limit designs to single-colour silk screening. This limitation arises from the drying process under the heater used in silk screening. However, Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing offers a revolutionary alternative, enabling vibrant, full-colour designs with just one heat press. Here’s a step-by-step guide to achieving high-quality DTF prints on tote bags.

Why Choose DTF Printing?
Unlike silk screening, which is cost-effective for bulk orders but restrictive for intricate designs, DTF printing allows for:

Full-colour designs in one press.
No background limitations, ensuring only the design is printed.
 Versatility across materials.

Step-by-Step Process for DTF Printing on Tote Bags

Prepare the Artwork

Select or create the design to be printed.
Remove the background to leave only the desired elements visible. This step ensures a clean finish when printed on a black tote bag.
Save the design as a PNG file to preserve transparency.

Set Up the Printer

Import the PNG file into the DTF printer software.
Outline the design using a variable underbase to define where colours and white ink will be printed.
Adjust settings to ensure the correct DPI (300 DPI is recommended for optimal quality).

Printing the Design

Apply the appropriate settings for DTF printing, including adding a secondary layer of white ink. This additional layer prevents potential dye migration from the fabric into the design.
Send the file to the print manager and print the design.

Applying Adhesive Powder

Immediately after printing, evenly coat the design with adhesive powder while the ink is still wet. Shake off excess powder.
Cure the adhesive powder by placing the print in an oven for 2–3 minutes.

Heat Press the Design

Place the cured design onto the tote bag.
Set the heat press to 150–155°C and press for 5–7 seconds. Adjust the temperature slightly if the bag shrinks.
Allow the design to cool before peeling the film away (cold peel method).

DTF vs. Silk Screening

Silk Screening: Ideal for large-scale, single-colour designs. Cost-effective for high volumes.
DTF Printing: Perfect for small batches and intricate, full-colour designs. Offers a bespoke, personalized touch.

Final Thoughts

DTF printing on tote bags is a game-changer for achieving vibrant, detailed designs without the constraints of traditional methods. Whether for personal use or small business, DTF provides unmatched versatility and quality.

Creating custom lanyards can be a rewarding project, especially when you’re personalizing them for customers. In this tutorial, we explored a straightforward method to achieve high-quality results without the need for complicated stitching. Here’s a breakdown of the process and some helpful tips to make your work more efficient.

Step-by-Step Demonstration

The process shown was designed to create a sample for a customer to visualize before placing their order. While there are multiple ways to customize lanyards, this approach highlights a method that avoids the need for unstitching, making it accessible to those without advanced sewing skills.

Key Insights:

Unstitching for Efficiency
While the demonstration avoided unstitching, it’s worth noting that having the lanyard unstitched allows you to press the design onto the entire surface more easily and uniformly. This can save time and reduce frustration, especially if you’re working on multiple lanyards.
 Alternative Heat Press Technique
The method shown utilized a corner of the heat press to apply the design. This technique was specifically demonstrated to show that it’s possible to work with a fully intact lanyard, accommodating those who might not have the tools or expertise to unstitch and restitch.
 The Power of DTF Technology
Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing opens up endless possibilities for personalization. Its versatility allows you to create vibrant and durable designs on a variety of materials, as demonstrated in this project. Whether you're customizing lanyards, t-shirts, or other accessories, DTF makes the process simpler and more creative.

Final Thoughts

By following this method, you can create beautiful, customized lanyards with minimal effort and maximum impact. Whether you're catering to a single customer or fulfilling bulk orders, this approach ensures a professional finish.
Thank you for taking the time to learn this process. We hope it inspires you to experiment with DTF printing and explore new creative possibilities. Stay tuned for more tips and tutorials in the next session!

Sublimation has never been more popular, and now there's an innovative twist—creating sublimation designs by hand. This guide walks you through using sublimation pens, a fun and simple method to bring custom, hand-drawn designs to life on various items.

What You Need

Printed Design: Start by printing a design of your choice.
Sublimation Paper: Place your printed design under the sublimation paper.
Sublimation Pens: Available in a variety of colours, sublimation pens let you trace or freehand your design, adding a personal touch.

How It Works

Once you've traced your design onto the sublimation paper, it’s time to bring it over to the heat press. Apply heat, and watch as the colours come to life with vibrant clarity. Even better, these designs can often be reused up to four times without losing their quality!

New Possibilities with Sublimation Pens

These sublimation pens from am.co.za open doors to countless creative options. One unique idea we tried is signature sublimation. Here’s how:

Capture the Signature: Take a photo of a signature, invert the image, and print it.
Trace with Light Assistance: Place the image under the sublimation paper on an LED frame, which enhances visibility for precise tracing.
Apply and Press: Once traced, secure the design onto a mug and press it with heat to transfer. The result? A customized mug with a perfectly positioned signature.

Imagine the applications! From signatures to intricate, hand-drawn patterns, sublimation pens let your creativity flow in exciting new directions. For more information and to explore your options, contact sales at AM.CO.ZA. Happy creating!
